How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

  • Troubleshooting Husky Brute Electric Trailer Jack That is Clicking
If your Husky Brute Electric Trailer Jack is only making a clicking noise and you have checked the power source there are a couple of other issues that may be occurring. Start by checking your ground connection to ensure it is secured to a clean, bare metal surface free of any type of paint or corrosion. The other issue may be that you have a bad switch that needs replacing. (Try electronic shop for replacement.) It is also possible that the jack was overextended or retracted and there...

  • Husky HB4500 Electric Jack Starts Going Down As Soon As Power Switch Is Released
Hello Garry, thanks for reaching out. It sounds like something in internally wrong with your jack. Could be a problem with the screw mechanism or with the motor. That husky hb4500 jack is an older model that is no longer available, so there are no replacement parts. The only fix I can offer would be a whole new jack. For that I recommend the following: - Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack - Drop Leg - A-Frame - 23" Lift - 4,500 lbs - Black # SC63VR

  • Troubleshooting Husky Brute 4500 Trailer Jack Not Operating with Controls
If your Husky Brute 4500 isn't extending or retracting properly then I recommend using the manual override to see if it's something internal or if it's an electronic part of the jack. For a replacement electrical part you'll need to contact Husky directly since they should have something for you. If it's internal then I recommend replacing the jack completely with the Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack # SC63VR. This is an A-Frame jack rated for 4,500 lbs and it offers a 23" lift...

  • Recommended Electric Trailer Jack for an A-Frame Trailer With 700 lb Tongue Weight
I recommend using the etrailer.com Electric Jack with a Footplate, part # EJ-3520-BBX, for A-Frames. This trailer jack is rated for 3,500 lbs so it will have more than enough power to lift and lower your tongue weight of 700 lbs. This trailer jack has a total lift of 25-1/8 inches and comes with an LED light that shines down towards the coupler to make connecting or disconnecting your trailer in the dark much easier. Another great feature about this electric trailer jack is that it has...

  • Replacement Jack Recommendation for Damaged RAM Trailer Products RAM EJ-3520-BBX 3,500 lb.
What you mentioned is not fixable but if you bought this less than a year ago it would be covered under warranty most likely. Who did you buy it from and how long ago? If you need to purchase a new electric tongue jack I would highly recommend the Stromberg Carlson # SC63VR jack rated for 4500 pounds of lift and equipped with a industy unique clutch that prevents the jack foot from being over extended or extracted which would cause damage/failure. It also has a drop foot that can add...

  • Troubleshooting Electric A-Frame Trailer Tongue Jack, # JET-3555 Blowing Fuses
You should be able to manually crank the Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack, # JET-3555, up and down by removing the rubber plug on the side and inserting the manual handle or a properly sized socket wrench. Turn clockwise to extend the jack and counter-clockwise to retract it. I spoke with one of our installers about the fuses blowing. He stated that the power wire could be shorting to ground or there could be an internal component that is shorting out. Make sure all ground connections are...

Hello Deena, thanks for reaching out. So I was not able to find any references for the part number you provided, but looking at pictures of the Arctic Fox 25y it appears to have a pretty standard electric tongue jack. So if you need a new one, I recommend the following: - Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack - Drop Leg - A-Frame - 23" Lift - 4,500 lbs - Black # SC63VR This has a 4,500 lb capacity so more than enough for your trailer. It has a weather resistant switch, and a built-in...

The only way to get a new control panel would be to replace your entire Smart Jack with part # LC643589. I reached out to my contact at Lippert who confirmed that the only replacement parts for the jack includes hardware like the pin or the footplate. With this being the case your best option to protect the buttons is a trailer jack cover like part # UF38-944020. If you'd rather use a different jack then I recommend the Stromberg Carlson # SC63VR because it is rated for 4,500 lbs, features...

I would be happy to help you. Based on the information you have given me I am going to give you the height of the Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack Item # SC63VR you referenced. This jack sits 21 1/4" above your trailer's frame. You will just need to hook your trailer up or raise it to where you would have it when your tailgate is down. • Best Replacement for the Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack
The Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack part # LC643589 is a good innovative option with memory features but it does have a design flaw in my opinion. The touchpad or controls are on the top of the jack. The reason that this is a problem is because the seals around the controls break down over time and water gets inside ruining the jack. This could be attributed to rough use, bad seals, but the touchpad being directly on the top of the jack means water can come straight in as opposed...

  • Troubleshooting Bulldog 3500 lb Electric Trailer Jack That Does Not Fully Retract Without Load
Usually when this occurs, it's because the jack has been over extended; there is a small lock nut in the channel on the inner tube of this jack that if it's over extended will cut into the V channel on the inside. When this happens, it damages the functioning of the jack. This was confirmed with my contact over at Horizon Global, who own Bulldog. Because of this, you're likely going to need to replace it. A good replacement for your jack would be the Bulldog # BD500187, which is the same...

  • Husky Brute Electric Trailer Jack Will Not Extend/Retract But Light Works
If you have power entering the extend/retract switch on the Husky Brute Trailer Jack, but not leaving then the switch is bad and will need to be replaced. It would also be worthwhile to re-ground the jack on the frame but again I believe the switch is your issue. If power passes through the swith then you are looking at a motor problem, or perhaps the foot is stuck due to over extension. As the motor and gears are not replaceable you may need a new jack. • Electric A-Frame Trailer Jack and Battery Box Recommendation for an Enclosed Trailer
You can get a jack and battery box from us, right here at etrailer! For a battery a 12 volt car battery will work fine. It doesn't have to be the fanciest battery (since they are getting so pricey these days) so long as it has the amperage rating for the draw of the jack you use. For a battery box you could use # 329-HM327BKS for group 27 batteries. The interior measures 13-1/4" long x 8-5/8" tall x 7" wide so the battery will need to fit those dimensions. It comes with mounting brackets...

  • Trailer Jack Recommendation For 14,000 Lb A-frame Dump Trailer
The rule of thumb for estimating a tongue weight is 10-15 percent of trailer weight. So your 14,000 pound trailer would have a tongue weight between 1400 lbs and 2100 lbs so any trailer jack rated over 2,500 lbs would be sufficient to lift the trailer's tongue however I recommend a higher capacity and high quality designed jack because they tend to last a bit longer. The most common reason for a trailer jack to stop working is because of friction that breaks down the gears and and over-extension. I...

  • Recommended Electric A-Frame Jack for Grand Design Imagine 2800BH Travel Trailer
To choose the proper electric trailer jack, you'll want to determine the trailer's tongue weight, which is usually between 10-15 % of it's as-towed weight. You listed the hitch or tongue weight as 604 lbs, but that's with a camper with no gear, propane or water stowed aboard. Your tongue weight is likely a couple of hundred pounds more. Because the jack you eventually end up with will not only have to lift and support the trailer's tongue weight but will also need to partially lift the...

  • Light on the Lippert Electric Trailer Jack Works but No Power to Leg
The problem you are describing on your Lippert Electric Trailer Jack part # LC285318 could be caused by a few different things. The most common problem we see that allows the light to work but not the leg is a bad ground. This could very well still allow for the light to function but not allow for enough power to operate the leg. I recommend checking the mounting surface that the jack is attached to since this is how it grounds. I would then remove the jack, sand down the surface with some...

It sure does! I checked with the manufacturer, Stromberg Carlson, for you and they verified for me that a ball screw mechanism is indeed used on the 4,500 lb A-Frame jack you asked about, which is the following part number: - Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack # SC63VR That was a good question because a jack with a ball screw mechanism is definitely the best option as they are the most efficient, durable type of trailer jack.

For a jack with the same 4500lb rating I recommend the Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack - Drop Leg - A-Frame - 23" Lift - 4,500 lbs - Black # SC63VR which offers up to 23" of lift, has a 2-year warranty, and will...

  • Best Way to Provide Power to Electric Trailer Tongue Jack
In a typical RV-style 7-way the 12V charge circuit is carried on the pin at the 1-o-clock position as you look at the socket from the rear of the vehicle. Please refer to the linked photo. The 12V feed from a vehicle 7-way can deliver just enough trickle-charge current to maintain a strong battery while you're on the road, but it is not the best way to power a trailer jack. The best way to power a trailer-mounted 12V tongue jack, like the Stromberg Carlson # SC63VR, is to install a dedicated...

If the Lippert Electric Trailer Jack # LC285318 will not retract then the first thing you will want to do is make sure there is power reaching the jack and it is properly grounded. If you use a circuit tester at the power wire just before it enters the jack that should give you a good idea of whether or not you have a dead battery or there is a short on the power wire.
